What happens if I overdose?

Everyone has a role to play, and sadly, no single step is going to make this problem completely disappear. As the primary election season kicks into high gear this week with the Iowa caucuses, Republican presidential candidates are pitching their messages to voters. One of the main themes at the rallies and town halls has been immigration, and specifically how, according to the presidential hopefuls, the U.S.-Mexico border issue is a leading driver of the influx of illicit fentanyl. There’s a misconception in the general population about the role that illegal immigration plays in the current fentanyl crisis. Massachusetts isn’t alone in the uptick of opioid related deaths during the pandemic.

In November, China’s President Xi Jinping agreed to direct Chinese chemical companies to curtail shipments of fentanyl precursor components to Latin America in an effort to reduce the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. More than 25,000 people have died from opioid-related overdoses in the state since 2011, according to state records. If an overdose is due to fentanyl  then multiple bolus injections of naloxone or even continuous infusions may be needed to reverse the opioid action. If you switch to fentanyl nasal spray from another form of fentanyl, you will not use the same dose. If you switch from using lozenge to using other forms of fentanyl, you will need to use a different dose. If you use the same dose of each medication, you may have life-threatening overdose symptoms.

Where to buy fentanyl test strips?

Research has shown that people who use fentanyl test strips often make changes that can keep them safer. In one study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, 70% of participants said they would change their behavior if they knew the drugs they used contained fentanyl. In April 2021, CDC and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced7 federal funding could be used to purchase FTS. This purchase approval applies to all federal grant programs, like CDC’s multiyear Overdose Data to Action cooperative agreement, if the purchase of FTS is consistent with the purpose of the program. Allowing federal grant programs to purchase FTS helps create opportunities for people who use drugs to interact with community-based organizations who may also offer mental health and behavioral services a person needs.

Another study [15] found that 91% of people reporting opioid use had at least one fentanyl-positive urine sample, yet only 18% reported using fentanyl. Another study that urine-tested individuals in a withdrawal management program [12] found that of those reporting they had never been exposed to fentanyl, two-thirds tested positive for fentanyl. General fentanyl dosing information

The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Connecticut and received board approval from the APT Foundation, Inc. methadone maintenance program in New Haven, CT. All participants signed informed consent before engaging in any research procedures. Participant demographics were collected, including age, self-reported sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, marital status, education status, housing status, income, and visits with a primary care physician in the past year (Table 1). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) only recently announced that federal funds may be used to purchase and supply FTS [26] in settings such as SSP’s. Greater efforts are now required to appropriately support FTS administration in SSP’s and drug treatment settings.
